About the Class:

  • Living Our Beliefs: You can believe anything and be a Methodist, just so long as you’re sincere. Such a misperception has deep historical and cultural roots. Explore a basic explanation of the beliefs and practices of the United Methodist Church as defined in Part II of The Book of Discipline. Uncover a deeper understanding and experience of Christian faith as you embrace the United Methodist way.
“Beliefs are to be lived; doctrine is to be practiced,” writes Carder in this updated edition of his 1996 bestseller. “The authenticity of beliefs lie in their ability to shape people and communities into the image of Christ and to promote holiness and happiness…. The important test of the validity of doctrines and beliefs for United Methodists is the kind of character they produce in individuals and communities and the actions they inspire in the world.” As one reviewer says, “Bishop Carder invites us to both understand and live our beliefs. With deep understanding of Wesley’s teaching, he inspires us to practice what we preach. That is the United Methodist way.”
The Instructor is Pam Churness, Certified Lay Minister (CLM), South District Director of Lay Servant Ministries.
  • Provide your own book: Living Our Beliefs: The United Methodist Way by Kenneth L. Carder from AmazonCokesbury or Upper Room.
  • Attendance is required at all sessions for credit. All those seeking certification as a Certified Lay Servant are invited to attend. The BASIC class and one Advanced Class is required to successfully apply for Certified Lay Servant status.
    • About Certified Lay Servant (CLS) status: After you take the Basic Lay Servant Class, you have 3 years to take an advanced class to qualify you as a Certified Lay Servant. If you want to continue on to being a Certified Lay Speaker, you will need to take the following advanced classes: Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts, Leading Prayer, Planning Worship, Leading Worship, United Methodist Heritage, United Methodist Polity and Preaching. For more information about Lay Servant Ministries, click here.

Zoom information will be sent to you by the instructor closer to the first class meeting.
