It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 15 years since Facebook transformed the internet into a massive global network for communication. Since that time, many churches have yet to create a Facebook page, let alone creatively think of ways to use this now ‘old’ technology to expand their mission and ministry. Similarly, the majority of new time visitors find their way to our churches not by the signs on the road, but through Google searches. One would think that churches would be actively updating and improving their search engine effectiveness, but many churches have no idea what a Google Ad Word or SEO is or how they can be used to help their ministries.

Throughout history, however, churches have been at the forefront of using technology to facilitate deeper discipleship: the Apostle Paul used the new technology of the codex (a bound book vs. scrolls) to spread the Gospel across Asia Minor, churches installed organs, the most sophisticated technologies of their day, to deepen worship experiences, and the Christian reformers used the Gutenberg press to make the Bible accessible to everyday Christians. How do we as 21st-century churches use the technology is available to us, and how do we as churches allow those technologies to become vehicles for discipleship?
