Event Details

Join us for updates on the human rights situation in the Philippines highlighting the silencing of those standing up for human rights through killings and arrests of poor, lawyers, church people and health workers and what we can do to materially support those being persecuted. An offering for victims of the recent Mount Taal volcano eruption will be taken.

This briefing will help educate everyone in the California-Pacific Conference to live life into 2016 UMC Resolution #6118 on the basics of the human rights situation in the Philippines and how we can live our faith in action in solidarity with our United Methodist siblings in the Philippines and the Filipino people. We welcome those concerned with human rights but who may not know anything about the Philippines, those concerned with Human rights in the Philippines, or those concerned with supporting our United Methodist siblings wherever they are in the world.

This event is co-sponsored by the Cal-Pac UMC Philippines Task Force, International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines – SoCal, and Malaya Movement. Speakers will illustrate how the human rights situation in the Philippines has deteriorated under the Duterte regime. The link will also be made to the US’ continued sending of aid to the Philippine military and police – those who are behind much of the human rights abuses – and how we in the US can act to correct this injustice.
