Back in September and October of 2016, a Cal-Pac UMVIM team led by Jennifer Demaree participated in a rebuild of a house destroyed by a tornado in the Memorial Day flooding in 2015 in Taylor, Texas.
The project went from an incomplete subfloor to reframing, sheeting and roofing the structure in a week, with additional work done by a team member who stayed in Texas for another event a week later. The Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) has very limited funds so our help was deeply appreciated by homeowner and LTRG.
The experienced team focused on one site although some additional community activity occurred at the thrift store and fund raising occurred as well.
The host site was Down Home Ranch, a center which is the residence of about twenty people with Down Syndrome about 40 minutes away. The weather was hot with high humidity and heat index for the week.
Taylor has about another 15 homes where active help is needed before the end of February when funding expires for the site manager.
Represented on the team were United Methodists from churches in Temecula, San Carlos, Foothills, Julian and Descanso churches from the South District as well as Monterey Park, Glendale, Camarillo, and Ontario.
