The Chosen is a groundbreaking multi-season miniseries about the life of Jesus.
There will be a one-hr-15-min study session for these episodes for 8 Wednesdays, but even if you don’t watch the series, it will be an edifying and growth experience. We will be showing an excerpt of The Chosen series at each session. Hope you might join us and even invite a friend!
About the Class:
- Media & Faith – A Creative & Biblical Study of Jesus & The Gospels to Reach New People, Part 3: As people of faith, storytelling has special meaning. We are people of the story, and we seek to identify and share our stories in nearly everything we do. Dancing With Words provides help for all church leaders to explore storytelling in faith development and acquire basic storytelling skills. They will discover ways storytelling enhances ministry and explore storytelling’s use in sermons and teaching.
- The instructor for this series is Rev. Garth Gilliam. The course is being organized by North District Lay Servant Ministries.
- Provide your own book: All participants will need a copy of Blessed Are the Chosen: An Interactive Bible Study (Vol 2) (Amazon). All other Class Resources will be supplied from LSM Ministries.
- Attendance is required at all sessions for credit. All those seeking certification as a Certified Lay Servant are invited to attend. The BASIC class and one Advanced Class is required to successfully apply for Certified Lay Servant status. This is one of the six classes required to become a Certified Lay Speaker. Other required advanced courses, in addition to the BASIC class for Certified Lay Speaker certification are Preaching, Leading or Planning Worship, Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts, United Methodist Heritage or United Methodist History, and United Methodist Polity.
- About Certified Lay Servant (CLS) status: After you take the Basic Lay Servant Class, you have 3 years to take an advanced class to qualify you as a Certified Lay Servant. If you want to continue on to being a Certified Lay Speaker, you will need to take the following advanced classes: Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts, Leading Prayer, Planning Worship or Leading Worship, United Methodist Heritage, United Methodist Polity and Preaching. For more information about Lay Servant Ministries, click here.

This class is open to participants from all Cal-Pac & Cal-Nev districts and others. To view the 2024 Tongan LSM Course series schedule, click here.
Prerequisite: Basic LSM
This course helps participants understand their spiritual gifts and how the church can use those gifts to fulfill its mission and ministry. Participants will also learn what it means to be a spiritual leader and will be equipped to lead others in exploring and using their spiritual gifts.
- All those seeking certification as a Certified Lay Servant are invited to attend. To learn more about Lay Servant Ministries, click here.
- Attendance is required at all sessions for credit.
- Provide your own book: Each One a Minister, a revised and enlarged edition of Carter’s previous book by the same title, begins with a 6-session study of Ephesians. Carter engages the reader in discovering the meaning of church, ministry, and gifts — from the early church up to the present. (available at The Upper Room)
- As a follow-up to the Bible study, readers and study groups look at ways in which God’s gifts are practical as well as spiritual. Four ministry categories, closely connected to the congregational primary task (receive, relate, equip, send), are identified. Scripture readings, activities, and ways to implement specific ministries are suggested.
- Designed to encourage individuals to discover God’s call to ministry in their own lives, Each One a Minister leads toward practical ways of using gifts in ministries in our congregations and in our communities. An ideal resource for clergy, lay leaders, study groups, and others seeking to identify and use their gifts in meaningful ways.
You will receive the Zoom link in your registration confirmation.
- Technical requirements: To participate in Zoom meetings, participants must have a reliable Internet connection, and a laptop, tablet, or smartphone device that can download and install the Zoom app. A web or phone camera and a microphone are highly recommended, although some users may call in via phone if a mic is not available.

“It’s just a meal…with a dose of encouragement and prayer.”
Hey, working clergy! You have a huge job. Few professions require the breadth of expertise that our work demands. Throw in a strange year when we are all learning new skills and creating new pathways for ministry, it can be overwhelming. In our current season of physical distancing, it might feel lonely.
We invite you to a Table of Grace, where in our shared covenant and the divine One who calls us, we will share a meal/snack/coffee/tea, scripture reading, reflection, and prayers. This table doesn’t require a sign-up or commitment from you: you can join us on when you are available or when you just need to know you aren’t alone. You may participate as little or as much as you desire.
We know that many of us are “Zoom’d out” but we hope that you will give it a try, and that the scripture reading, reflection, and prayer time will provide encouragement, support, and a mid-week lift for your soul.

This event is open to clergy and laity from all Cal-Pac districts. The event will be limited to 50 participants.
If you’re like most of us, the needs of your community are greater than the resources you have at your immediate disposal. You’ve always heard there is non-profit funding available but aren’t sure how to access it.
You’re in the right place. This workshop will help you understand the nature of philanthropic giving and hopefully open the wonderful world of grant writing.
This class is designed for clergy and laity who are interested in pursuing non-profit funding for their ministry. With Q&A, the class will be interactive, and a follow-up guide will be provided to all participants.
After your RSVP is received, a Zoom link will be included in your confirmation email.

This class is open to participants from all Cal-Pac districts. This class is sponsored by East District Lay Servant Ministries.
- This is one of the six classes required to become a Certified Lay Speaker. All those seeking certification as a Certified Lay Servant or Certified Lay Speaker are invited to attend, as well as those who are seeking to learn more about themselves.
This advanced course offers practical guidelines for avoiding common pitfalls of public prayer. Prayer is something we learn; it is something that can be taught. For many, however, the only teaching about prayer they ever receive is modeled in Sunday worship.
This course may challenge some of your assumptions, test some of your preconceived ideas, stretch your thinking and enrich your prayer life. It will, at the very least, present you with an opportunity to grow in the discipline of leading public prayer.
- Attendance is required at all sessions for credit.
- The instructor is Rev. Martin Finau Jr., pastor at Temple City First UMC.
- All those seeking certification as a Certified Lay Servant are invited to attend.
- The BASIC class and one Advanced Class is required to successfully apply for Certified Lay Servant status.
- If you have taken the Basic Lay Servant Class within the last three years, taking this advanced class will qualify you as a Certified Lay Servant.
- If you want to continue on to being a Certified Lay SPEAKER, you will need to take the following advanced classes: Preaching, Leading or Planning Worship, Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts, Leading Prayer, UM Heritage or History and UM Polity. A Conversation with Adam Manasra, a Young Adult community organizer from Wadi Foquin in the West Bank
Learn firsthand about life for Palestinians under the Israeli occupation and support the brave efforts of this village
Meet a remarkable young man and hear his testimony of life under Israel’s 57-year-long military occupation. Learn how his village, like so many others across Palestine, is being slowly and cruelly erased, and discover what he and his community are doing to resist.
Adam Manasra organizes a young adult leadership team in the West Bank village of Wadi Foquin, making online presentations to tell the world the reality of their life under military occupation. At 25 years of age, he provides a valuable perspective from this younger generation of Palestinians.
Adam has been itinerating in the United States to amplify a letter from members of Congress to the State Department, calling for “an immediate halt to all demolitions and property seizures in Wadi Foquin.” That letter was the result of the advocacy work of Friends of Wadi Foquin in recent years.
Since the time that letter was written, war has erupted, resulting in the genocidal assault on Gaza that the world is witnessing with horror. Less noticed has been the terrifying escalation of violence against Palestinians across the West Bank.
Adam’s visits across the US are also raising funds for a new community development project in the village to build a Guest House. As a trained engineer, Adam is the designer of the Guest House and will oversee the construction. A creative use of Wadi Foquin’s land, this project is also an expression of resistance to Israel’s ongoing land confiscation.

This webinar is hosted by the Desert Southwest Conference New and Vital Faith Committee.
We invite you to attend the one-hour Zoom presentation with the Directors of Communications from each Western Jurisdiction Conference and Brenda Smotherman from UMCom about communicating about the General Conference.
In essence, this is a crisis communication training/refresher, but we’ll also share our plan for distributing news about General Conference, and then what to do if:
- A reporter is at your church or via social media asks you to comment on their story about General Conference.
- Who’s the official spokesperson and speaks on behalf of The UMC.
- Where to find the real news and daily outcomes if you see something alarming on Social Media about General Conference.
About the Guest Presenter
Brenda Smotherman is the Associate Public Relations Director at United Methodist Communications and has been with the agency for more than five years. She provides publicity support for UMCom, communicators across the UMC connection, The Connectional Table, and the Commission on the General Conference. Smotherman oversees media pitching, several social media channels, publicity consultation and training, and supportive written content, resources and reports.
Before joining UMCom, she served as the Publicity and Marketing Manager for United Methodist Publishing House’s Abingdon Press. Smotherman previously served as a literary publicist for Thomas Nelson’s nonfiction books and Bible-related products and a publicist for Christian companies, authors and recording artists via McCain & Co. Public Relations. In her early career, she worked for more than a decade in the Christian music industry, mainly handling marketing and tour promotions for Provident Label Group artists.
Brenda Smotherman resides in Middle Tennessee with her husband and two rescue dogs.
