Church and Society Stands in Solidarity Celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Church & Society)

In celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we recognize our church’s complicity in systems of oppression, colonization, and attempted erasure. As inheritors of this damaging legacy, we must confess our brokenness and actively continue our journey of repentance and healing.

October 10, 2022

Today we stand in solidarity with all those seeking healing and justice both within and outside of The United Methodist Church. We uplift the call of the Native American International Caucus to end federal recognition of Columbus Day and live fully into our church’s repudiation of the Doctrine of Discovery. We continue our advocacy alongside indigenous communities protecting sacred lands from exploitation.

In addition, we acknowledge our church’s complicity in immoral and inhumane actions that sought to erase the language, culture, and spiritual practices of Native peoples, we renew our call for this Congress to pass the Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policy.
