A plea for action from Pastor Krista Givens

Aloha, Colleagues in the Ministry of Jesus Christ!

Imagine No Malaria is an extraordinary effort by The people of The United Methodist Church to eliminate malaria as a major source of death and suffering in Africa by 2015. The California-Pacific Annual Conference has set a goal to raise 3 million dollars.

This is a huge goal, but one that can make a huge difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters suffering from a treatable and preventable disease. Imagine No Malaria not only provides mosquito nets to those in need, but also provides education, support and oversight of the program.

So, what can we do? Here are some suggestions on how to approach this goal:

First: Choose a Leader

Each local church, worshiping community and District Clergy Hui needs a leader to organize the effort. Once that person/persons is selected, please send the name and contact information to myself (Rev. Krista Givens, email: ksgivens@me.com) and our Conference Coordinator, Katie Kevorkian (email: kkevorkian@calpacumc.org)

Next: Set a Church Goal

As a church community, or a worshiping group, develop a goal that is challenging, but do-able. Imagine each small group in your church had a fundraiser. Imagine your youth and children, after learning about the need, raised enough for 10 mosquito nets ($10/ each). Imagine each family  giving of themselves for others in a way that really made a difference. If you can imagine it, it is possible!

Finally: Be Creative in your fundraising efforts

The Nationwide project has some great ideas for all age levels on their website: http://www.ImagineNoMalaria.org

And our Cal-Pac Annual Conference website has ways to connect with other groups and churches involved in the effort: http://www.buzzkills.net/

If you have questions, suggestions or ideas that we can imagine this dream together, please contact me.

God bless you and Mahalo for your efforts!

Krista
