The 35th Convocation of the Vietnamese National Caucus (VNC) of the United Methodist Church convened July 24–27, 2025, at Garden Grove United Methodist Church in California, with the theme “Equip to Serve” (Ephesians 4:12). The gathering drew retired and active clergy, spouses, laity, and representatives from Vietnamese Methodist churches across the United States—California, Texas, Michigan, Illinois, Virginia, and Colorado—as well as participants from Vietnam, Germany, and Korea.
The Convocation began with fellowship for pastors and spouses, prayer, and worship. Scriptural reflections throughout the sessions emphasized equipping believers for ministry. Teaching and coaching addressed several key areas: the role of local pastors within the UMC, evangelism beyond the church walls, and discipleship modeled on Practicing the Way: Be with Jesus, Become Like Him, Do as He Did. Leaders stressed the urgent need to train pastors and laypeople to sustain congregations and mission.

Testimonies and ministry updates enriched the convocation. Stories included fifty years of overseas ministry, plans for a Vietnamese outreach in Monroe, GA, children’s karaoke resources, and the Charis School in Vietnam for undocumented students. Attention was also given to new bilingual Bible and study materials, supporting the community’s spiritual growth.
Important business decisions were taken. The long-discussed Hymnal Fund was confirmed for worship-related initiatives, and a new financial contribution system was approved, setting monthly support at $2 per member from each local church. Rules were amended to clarify that observers from outside denominations may attend but not vote, and to allow interim replacements on the Executive Committee. Delegates also adopted a resolution opposing the appointment of LGBTQIA+ clergy to Vietnamese congregations, reflecting current concerns within the caucus.

Auxiliary groups met for worship, service, and elections. The Women’s Union extended officer terms from two to four years; the Men’s Union and youth reported strong Bible study and fellowship programs; young adults discussed family and discipleship; and children participated in Vacation Bible School and participated in the closing worship. Leadership elections reaffirmed Rev. Phan Duc Hieu as president, Rev. Nguyen Chi My as vice president, and expanded the Nominating Committee with new representatives.
The convocation closed with Sunday worship, led by youth and children, and expressions of gratitude for Garden Grove UMC’s hospitality. Delegates celebrated strengthened relationships, renewed mission vision, and unity in service, while also preparing for continued ministry challenges and opportunities in the coming year.
