Post-Storm Recovery near Desert Hot Springs (Disaster Response)

The California-Pacific Conference Disaster Response Task Force (DRTF) is looking for volunteers to help an elderly survivor with visual and mobility impairments (80% visual impairment and wheelchair user for much of her life) affected by Tropical Storm Hilary in August.

Work will begin on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, with training in the morning and work in the afternoon.

For each day, 6-8 volunteers are needed. The following workdays are currently available for signup:

• Thursday, November 9 – Monday, November 13
• Saturday, November 18
• Monday, November 27 – Friday, December 1

The listed workdays are set to have a construction manager on site. More dates will be added if we find any other available managers.

Volunteers may sign up for just one or more days.

Expected Qualifications of the Volunteer:

• We will accept all Early Response Teams (ERTs).
• Those without training but willing to work with experienced/trained team members in disaster work are also welcome.
• It would be a good idea to have your tetanus shot up to date.

Expected Responsibilities of the Volunteer:

Work teams will gather at the home of the survivor to repair water damage and perform other repairs needed. These might include plastering the exterior of the cabin, restoring fencing, and other opportunities to improve the daily life of the survivor with disabilities.

Volunteers must bring a completed, signed copy of the Medical and Liability Release form (.docx).

Accommodation:

We have the use of a nearby mobile home that can sleep 5; there are 2-star motels for about $60 per night just up the road. After a hard day’s work, usually a bed and shower are about all that’s needed. We may cook as a group at the mobile home or use local businesses. We will have flushing toilet access during the day. Flexibility is the key!
