Guide to 2019-2020 Provisional Membership Application

The application packet for Provisional Membership is now available online.

Dates to Apply: Immediately Following the District Committee on Ordained Ministry Recommendation until October 2, 2019 by 11:59:59 p.m. (PST)

Starting from July 1 to October 2, 2019, Certified Candidates wanting to apply for Provisional Membership may go to the Board of Ordained Ministry’s website www.calpacumc.org/bom and select “Provisional Membership” under the Applications section. The first deadline is now the first Wednesday in October (October 2, 2019) and the second deadline is the first Wednesday in December (December 4, 2019).

On the website, you will find all the forms to apply for Provisional Membership. The Application and Reference List Forms are now online forms rather than PDF files. You may fill out the forms and start working on the requirements as of July 1st, but you may not submit them until you have received the recommendation from your District Committee on Ordained Ministry (which usually is in September). 

When working on your exam papers, please make sure to use THIS YEAR’S questions as instructions and questions may change slightly from year to year.

Instructions:

The application packet is comprised of PDF files and online forms.

  • Online Forms:  The Application and the References List form are ONLINE forms. We strongly recommend using a recently updated browser, preferably Chrome or Firefox, to complete this application. Older browsers may be missing functionality in logical conditions.  If you choose to “Save & Resume” your application, carefully save the link and follow the instructions to have the recovery link sent to your email. This link only saves your information for 30 days. The Conference and Board of Ordained Ministry are unable to retrieve “Save & Resume” URLs for you and do not have access to your work until it is submitted. If you want to start on your application before the recommendation of the District Committee, you would need to save your work. If the submission date is after the 30 days the recovery link is good for, a workaround so you don’t lose all your work is to go in and change something in the answers on the form and request a new “Save & Resume” link before the 30 days expire. Review your email address before submitting your application. If you do not receive recovery link or submission confirmation emails in your inbox, check your spam/junk folder.
  • PDF files: To view and fill out the documents in PDF format, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on the computer or device where the files will be downloaded. Do not open them in a browser or a default computer application such as “Preview” or “Page.” Please DOWNLOAD each file and use the Adobe Acrobat Reader to access the file. You can either right click on each PDF document and choose “Save link as” on a PC or press the Ctrl (or Control) key, click on the file, and choose “Download Linked File” on a Mac. The forms will need to be filled out in Adobe Acrobat Reader and then emailed to Rev. Sunyoung Lee, Provisional Registrar at PMReg@bom.calpacumc.org and Cathy Wilson, Administrative Coordinator to the Board at Admin@bom.calpacumc.org.

Applicants for Provisional Membership must have attended the ‘Orientation to Ministry’ prior to submitting the application. If you have not attended the ‘Orientation to Ministry’ by October 3rd of the year prior to the commissioning year, the application cannot be processed. The Candidacy Summit fulfills the ‘Orientation to Ministry’ requirement. The last event to fulfill this requirement before applying this year to the Board of Ordained Ministry will be at the Orientation To Ministry on August 24, 2019. The registration form is located on our website at www.calpacumc.org/bom.

You must also provide proof that you completed 1 unit (400 hours) of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) by June 1, 2020.  If you passed the District Committee September interview for recommendation to the Board of Ordained Ministry in 2018, you have a one year pass to not have to do the CPE requirement.  If the candidate does not pass the Board interviews in 2020, they will have this requirement for applying again in the future.
