This course sponsored by Hawai`i District Lay Servant Ministries and is open to participants from all Cal-Pac districts. The class size will max at 25 participants and registration will close if that number is reached.

This an advance course introduced at the Association of Conference Director of Lay Servant Ministries (ACDLSM) in January 2022.  The author of the textbook is Bishop Kenneth Carder who also wrote “Living Our Beliefs” the text for the Heritage course.

This course will help lay servant ministers understand dementia from a spiritual standpoint and become more comfortable ministering with all people especially those affected by this and similar conditions.  Together we will learn about dementia, see people with dementia as disciples of Jesus and discover how to relate to them in a helpful manner. The five sessions will cover:

Session 1: Dementia as a Medical and Theological Challenge (and an Opportunity)
Session 2: We Are More than Our Capacities
Session 3: Incarnation and the Ministry of Presence
Session 4: Dementia, Discipleship, and Grief
Session 5: Toward a Dementia-Friendly Church (to really be the church)

  • All those seeking certification as a Certified Lay Servant or Certified Lay Speaker are invited to attend, as well as those who are seeking to learn more about themselves.
    • About Certified Lay Servant (CLS) and Certified Lay Speaker status: All those seeking certification as a Certified Lay Servant are invited to attend.
