Action Alert: Congress Must Prioritize Grace Over Greed in 2024 Spending (Church & Society)

We are at a pivotal point in our legislative process as the coming weeks will determine funding that implicates all five of Church and Society’s priorities of climate, poverty, health, peace, and civil and human rights.

September 19, 2023

As United Methodists, we have a moral imperative to ensure humanity’s flourishing.

Throughout the Bible, we are reminded of God’s desire for humanity to live, “in an economy of abundance in which neighbors love and care for each other and no one lives in scarcity.” (United Methodist Book of Resolutions #4064)

The United States Congress will soon set out to pass spending bills for the 2024 fiscal year. We must demand that our leaders prioritize grace over greed.

Congress has until September 30th, 2023, to carry out the appropriations process in order to avoid a government shutdown.

It is alarmingly evident, from proposed legislation, that programming in support of marginalized populations is in jeopardy.

While a deal was reached in mid-2023 to cut spending in order to maintain the debt ceiling, the U.S. House of Representatives has proposed to cut spending even further for 2024.

We are at a pivotal point in our legislative process as the coming weeks will determine funding that implicates all five of Church and Society’s priorities of climate, poverty, health, peace, and civil and human rights.

We must advocate now!
